5 dietary tips for gastric cancer patients
Gastric cancer or stomach cancer affects the inner lining of the stomach. People with the disease often experience indigestion or bloating, or one might feel full after eating small amounts of food. All of this can lead to a lack of appetite, weight loss, and malnutrition. Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming vital nutrients is important for gastric cancer patients, and dietary tips can help them do just that.
- Eat small portions multiple times a day
A tumor in the stomach and/or surgery reduces appetite in gastric cancer patients. They may also feel full quickly and experience gastrointestinal discomfort. Experts advise eating about six mini meals a day instead of two or three regular-sized meals to ease these symptoms. This way, one can get the essential nutrients to tolerate treatment and maintain a healthy weight. - Choose high-protein foods
The body needs protein to repair damaged cells and tissues and strengthen the immune system. People with gastric cancer should select protein sources that are easy to digest. These include tender chicken or turkey, fish, Greek yogurt, avocado, tofu, pureed beans, eggs, and nut butters. Excess fiber can make one feel full quickly or uncomfortably, so high-fiber protein sources are best avoided. - Limit the intake of processed foods
Some studies suggest that gastric cancer increases the risk of colorectal cancer, and consuming processed meats like sausage, deli meats, and bacon is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Processed foods also have higher sodium content, which can add to several health problems. Additionally, one should avoid sugary foods and drinks like candies, sodas, and packaged fruit juices as they’re loaded with empty calories. - Consume a variety of fruits and vegetables
Fruits and veggies are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that the body needs to fight cancer. So, it’s advisable for patients to consume plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables. That said, it’s best to avoid high-fiber fruits and veggies like apples, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower and opt for softer fruits like bananas and melons instead. - Steer clear of irritants
Nausea is quite common in people with gastric cancer, and caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, and spicy foods can exacerbate it. So, it’s crucial to limit their intake or eliminate them from one’s diet. Alcohol can also weaken the immune system and cause dehydration.
